| Established in 1996, as a private college of engineering in affiliation with Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) in Scotland, UK, the Caledonian College of Engineering, Oman has taken giant strides in its aim to fulfill the mission of providing high quality engineering education and contributing to the economic industrial, social and cultural development of the Sultanate of Oman.
Since its formation, the College has graduated 2,347 students, 992 with diplomas, 956 with degrees and 399 with honours degrees. The College has 55 lecture rooms, 32 specialist laboratories, a multipurpose assembly hall, conference hall, library, information centre, cafeteria, plus staff offices and central service areas. The current campus areas are fully served by hardwired and wireless local area network, a bank of 14 servers, and full internet access.
As the College has developed academically through the period from 2000, high investment has been made in infrastructure. Currently further buildings are under construction, and an extensive infrastructure master plan has been produced, covering the period to 2014.
The College, started with 27 students in 1996, currently has over 2700 students, 260 staff and offers 15 undergraduate programmes and two masters programme. In 2007, the College offered its first masters degrees through GCU and, in 2008, affiliations were extended through a linkage with Vellore Institute of Technology University (VITU) in India through the commencement of a further Masters degree and an additional undergraduate programme. These qualifications are awarded by VITU.
The College has created an ambience of research and has achieved a modicum of success in research performance over the last two years. The success can be measured through funded research projects, organization of international conferences and research collaborations. More than 75 research publications have emanated from the College and 19 members of staff are undertaking PhD studies, supported by the College under staff development.
The College has established formal research cooperation with GCU; VITU; the National Institute of Technology – Durgapur (India); the Indian Institute of Information Technology – Allahabad (India); the International Research Centre for Renewable Energy (Germany) and the Public Establishment for Industrial Estates (Oman).
The College believes strongly in a learning experience that develops personal and communication skills, gives ownership to each student of their learning experience, and emphasizes social and community responsibilities. There is strong support for student activities, recreation and societies, and Caledonian students are major contributors to charities through their group efforts.
