Glasgow Caledonian
University and Caledonian College Oman Launch Major
Initiative to Benefit Alumni in Oman
Caledonian College of Engineering Oman and Glasgow Caledonian
University (GCU) are planning a gala Re-Union of alumni,
past graduates of the College and University. This is
just the start. A programme of events, information,
a new website, career planning, student and alumni mentoring
are all planned. Much more detail will soon be made
available.
With the number of people who have graduated from Caledonian
over the past years now approaching 2,000, there is
a substantial professional community in Oman and the
region.
These exciting plans were disclosed at a gathering
of alumni who met with the College and University officials,
during a visit to Oman by representatives of GCU, who
were in the country to attend a number of high level
meetings and the Graduation and Awards Ceremony.
Welcoming the members present Professor Frank McIntosh,
Principal and Dean of Caledonian College expressed great
delight at the presence of a wide cross-section of alumni
at this first meeting and discussion. Alumni present
included two members of the first group of Caledonian
College/GCU graduates from 1997 as well as two who had
graduated at the most recent ceremony on Sunday 9 September
2007.
Addressing the gathering Mr Colin McCallum, Vice President
of the GCU Foundation and Director of Development at
Glasgow Caledonian University, said, ‘The programme
we are planning for our alumni will not only bring together
former students of the Caledonian College of Engineering,
but also alumni of Glasgow Caledonian University who
studied in Scotland and who now reside in the Gulf region.
The greetings of the University’s Principal and
Vice Chancellor, Professor Pamela Gillies, are sent
to all alumni and the University’s commitment
to Oman is reinforced. We are excited by the many opportunities
that a renewed engagement with our alumni will create.’
Discussions with the group of alumni present, with
advice and input from the College and University executives,
produced many excellent ideas and suggestions which
will pave the way for the development of an outstanding
programme offering tremendous benefits to all alumni
of the Caledonian College and Glasgow Caledonian University.
The first step in the programme is to update the current
database of alumni held by the College in Oman and the
Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland. Thus Caledonian
Oman alumni will be joining a family of over 60,000
GCU alumni from all over the world.
Already Mr Mukthar Ali (BSc 1999), Mr Saif Al Kindi
(BSc 2002), Mr Said Saif Said Al Sibani (BSc 2007) and
Mr Mohammed Hamid Al Nassri (BSc 2007) have volunteered
to form a founding alumni committee, and they have been
tasked with helping to find the current addresses of
as many former students as possible.
