Caledonian Research Support Programme

1.0 Introduction

CCE is committed to innovative, technology driven research and research training to underpin the most effective teaching and learning strategies for the delivery of engineering programmes. The College is fully aware of the need and requirement of extending the research activities in order to enhance academic development and health of the programmes. CCE encourages the research and scholarly activities of the staff members and students and supports such activities financially, where appropriate. The college has been promoting internal research grant system through Caledonian Research Support Programme (CRSP).

CRSP was introduced to support members of staff and student to pursue research

2.0 Objectives:

  1. Encourage research initiatives by staff and students in area of strategic direction of the college as well as interest of individuals
  2. Promote research capacity building and research culture within the college
  3. Develop and nourish innovation and creativity among staff and student.

3.0 Staff Research Support Programme

3.1 Expected Outcomes

  1. Develop skills and experience in research grant proposal writing
  2. Promote research proposals from staff or group of researchers
  3. Support multidisciplinary and collaborative research team
  4. Improve the capabilities and competitive advantage in the chosen area
  5. Improve research outputs and publications
  6. Advancement of research understanding of the specific area that will lead to open research grant application

3.2 General Rules for Staff Research Support Programme:

  1. Principal Investigator must be a full time academic member of CCE with PhD qualification, Co PI or co –investigator can be PhD / Master’s degree holder.
  2. Academic staffs who are already in association as a PI or Co-PI with externally funded research project are not eligible to apply until that project is completed
  3. The application must approved by the relevant HoD
  4. The maximum duration of the grant is 3 semesters or 18 months
  5. Only one application can be submitted by the same PI during an academic year and eligible to reapply by same PI after the completion of existing research
  6. Failure in conducting / termination of the project by PI for any reasons, the PI is responsible to return unused fund and a replacement should be appointed by HoD in coordination with AD-PGR for the continuation of the project or make necessary settlement with college to return the fund used
  7. At the closing of project, any unutilized fund to be returned to College
  8. All procurements towards the project shall be made by the college
  9. The College research policy on ethics and misconduct will be applicable to the proposal and conduct of research

4.0 Student Research Support Program

4.1 Expected Outcomes

  1. Developing skills in writing research proposal and research methodology
  2. Promoting research learning experience and creativity among students
  3. Enhancing understanding of the process of research and hands on research training
  4. Enhancing the student’s research outputs through publications and product development

4.2 General Rules for Student Research Support Program

  1. A research team comprising of 2-3 CCE students is eligible to apply
  2. Team leader should be an Omani student enrolled in an undergraduate ( Full time only) / Masters programme at CCE
  3. The team should have a supervisor for the project , who must be a full time faculty at CCE with minimum qualification of master’s degree
  4. GPA should be more than 2.50 or equivalent.
  5. The applicant must complete at least second year courses (or equivalent of two years of credits points) for UG programmes / must be an enrolled student of Master level either in semester 1 or semester.2
  6. The maximum duration of the grant is 3 semesters or 18 months

5.0 Proposal Submission & Evaluation

  1. The PI / team leader prepares the proposal and circulate it to all team members as per the format of application for research project proposal under the scheme of staff / student research support program both in hardcopy and electronic copy
  2. The proposal should be submitted to AD(PG&R)
  3. The research committee will evaluate the proposal and give scoring based on clarity of the proposal, scientific significance of the proposal, research methodology, practicability and applicability in the context of College and regional strategic importance, and budget.
  4. The RC evaluates and ranks the proposal and provide recommendation to Dean
  5. The number of projects selected for the award of grant shall be subjected to evaluation score and availability of the research grant
  6. The final funding decision will be given by the Dean
  7. Notification of approval or disapproval of the proposal will be communicated by AD(PGR)

7.0 Post award process

  1. Research Contract between the college and PI / team leader
  2. Interim progress report half way through the project
  3. Financial report at the middle and at the end of the project
  4. Final report within one month after the end date of the award with financial statement
