ASME Student Chapter

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) is an international professional organization. The professional society arranges conferences, organizes design contests, showcases new technology, sets ethical standards in engineering and develops codes and standards as well as other mechanical engineering related services.
The Caledonian College ASME Student Section was inaugurated on 10th April 2005 by Dr. Tasneem Pervez, Associate Professor & Chair Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering Sultan Qaboos University. It is run by students who share a common interest in Mechanical Engineering.

The objective of this student body is to compliment student education with professional and scholarly activities. It  would expose students to acquire and update technical knowledge via in-house seminars, expert lectures and industrial visits. The following activities were arranged under this banner since the inception of student chapter.

  • Guest Lecture delivered by Mr. Saud Al Yamadi – Petroleum Development Oman on 28th March 2006 with a focus on “What Big Business Looking in for you?”
  • Guest Lecture delivered by Dr M.Ramaswamy – Rustaq Hospital Engineer on 18th December 2006 on the topic “Maintenance and Repair of Refrigerators and Unitary Type of Air Conditioners”.

ACTIVITIES OF ASME FOR AY 2008-09

  • Expert Lecture & Presentation given by Mr. Sadhasivam, Training Manager – Suhail Bhawan Automobiles, Oman on 22nd March 2008 on the topic “Recent Developments in Automobile Sector”.
  • Arranged an industrial visit for students & staff to PDO, Oman on 18th November 2008 and National Factory for Safety Equipment, Rusayl, Muscat on           23rd November 2008.
  • Guest Lecture delivered by Dr M.Ramaswamy - Rustaq Hospital Engineer on 24th November 2008 on the topic “Role of Engineers in Nation Building.
  • Guest Lecture delivered by Mr.Maan H.Alasfoor on 29th March 2009 on the topic “A Young Professional’s Perspective”.

SPE - STUDENT CHAPTER

Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) - Students Chapter at CCEO was inaugurated on 1st December 2008 with a guest speech on “Mission and Scope of SPE”. The objective of SPE student chapter at CCEO is to update students’ technical knowledge on exploration, development and production of oil & gas resources and related technologies and to enhance their technical and professional competence in these areas.
The following events were held at CCEO as a part of SPE activities for the AY 2008-09.

  • Two student members, from level 3 & 4 each, were sponsored by CCEO to take part and present their technical papers in student paper contest held at Texas A&M University, Doha, Qatar on 15th November 2008. One of them Mr. Yahoop, Level 4 student has bagged 5th rank for his presentation.
  • Arranged an industrial visit for students & staff to PDO, Oman on 18th November 2008 and to Daleel Petroleum, Ibri on 17th of April ‘09
  • A guest lecture was delivered by Dr. Tariq Al Sabahi, Industrial Hygienist, Petroleum Development Oman, on Occupational Hazards in Oil & Gas.
  • Guest Lecture, jointly arranged with ASME student chapter, delivered by Mr.Maan H.Alasfoor on 29th March 2009 on the topic “A Young Professional’s Perspective”.

There are sixty student members enrolled so far in SPE chapter plus three staff members including staff coordinator while thirty five students have registered for ASME student chapter now. The enrollment process of membership for both chapters is carried out regularly and CCEO encourages launching and successful functioning of such collaborative and professional bodies to inspire students for national and international level exposure.
