The Purpose of the Foundation Studies Programme

The Foundation Programme prepares students for study on engineering diploma courses and for further study on degree courses. It is intended as an introduction to the language and scientific/mathematical concepts of technical training. It also gives students the language skills and mathematical and scientific knowledge they need for academic study at engineering diploma level.

We know that, in many cases, it has been a long time since students left school or college and what they are about to experience will be very different to what they have experienced before. In some cases may never have learned the skills, either linguistic or study-based, required for diploma and degree level studies. One purpose of the programme is to help students acquire these skills. The other is to bring students' English to a level where they can carry out all the tasks that they will be required to do. This includes completing assignments and writing reports as well as all aspects of classroom, laboratory and self-directed learning with confidence and ability.

PROGRAMME

Every engineer knows that a strong structure depends on strong foundation. It is the same in education. A firm foundation of basic skills and knowledge is necessary in order to embark on the specialist engineering diploma courses. This is what we aim to provide with our Foundation Studies Programme.

Caledonian College is committed to achieving the highest standards in education. Students who are enrolled on the Foundation Studies Programme are given an opportunity to develop skills in English Language, Mathematics, Physics and CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) to levels which will enable them to start diploma studies with confidence. Success in these subjects can lead to degree qualifications in their chosen discipline and the possibility of study abroad. They will be able to function effectively and confidently in the second language.

The greatest emphasis is on the students abilities in English. We aim to ensure that students are able to function in the most important areas of their future lives in English Language. Language courses consist of core grammer, technical English, reading, writing, listening & speaking skills.

In addition, we provide intensive tuition in mathematics and science. These, like all subjects, are taught in English. They are intended as refresher courses for students who have not attained appropriate standards in their secondary education but have previously studied these subjects in Arabic. They are also vital for students undertaking engineering courses as they form a bedrock of knowledge on which all engineering theory is based.

THE FOUNDATION STUDIES PROGRAMME

Students who are placed in the Foundation Studies Programme will undertake one of two study plans, based on their performance in the placement test:

  • 2 semester (elementary and intermediate) Foundation course for both day and evening students.
  • 1 semester (intermediate) Foundation course for both day and evening students.
