Welcome to Foundation, actually the Foundation department was originally established in 1996 and has steadily grown over the past 13 years so that we now have 40 staff and just under 600 students. In 2008 the Foundation department was renamed the School of Foundation Studies.
The school comprises 3 departments Language and Learning, Technobasics, and a newly created IT Skills department. The rationale behind the new title is to help us the staff to focus on preparing you the students for your future as undergraduates and later as successful employees and responsible citizens of Omani society.
We think that you don’t only need help in revising the grammar you have learnt at school we think you need help in learning how to take notes and organise them in a file, we also feel that you need help in making the most of your dictionary. We also want to help you to be able to find information in the library as well as on the internet. This is why the department is called Language and Learning not just English Language.
In the same we feel that you don’t just need to revise the Science and Maths you learnt at School, you also need to see how it relates to the real world and particularly the technological world of Engineering. So the department is now called Technobasics.
Finally as we all now we live in the age of the computer; everybody must know how to use one. This is why we have a department dedicated to training you in the basic computer skills needed for Undergraduate study today.
Last but not least we are continually updating and refining our programme so that it is integrated into a whole rather than 3 separate strands. Most people learn better if they can see the whole picture coming together.
Our programme is not easy and you will be required to work hard on your own or groups to meet deadlines. However, if you are willing to do this we are convinced you will leave us with the skills and confidence to make the most of your future
