The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at College of Engineering, National University of Science and Technology organized a one day Student Project Competition at their Al Hail Campus on 23rd December 2018. It was the first time that the department conducted this event.

Twelve students who are in their final semester participated in the competition and showcased their unique ideas and designs. Professor Dr. Ahmed Al Balushi, Dean of College of Engineering, Professor A Vallavaraj, Associate Dean Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Hafez Al Sadeq, Head of the Department and Dr. Natiq Joodi, Deputy Head of the Department encouraged the event by visiting the venue and hearing to the presentations made by each student.

The main idea behind this competition was to encourage students to bring out commercially viable solutions for the construction industry through innovation and creativity. Professor Dr. Ahmed Al Balushi opined that "Students has to be connected with the industry through such initiatives so that it can benefit the society and country at large". He appreciated some of the work being done by the students and their supervisors and informed them to commercialize if they find a suitable partner in the industry. He also informed that students and their supervisors should publish their work in reputed journals and also in newsletters of different construction companies.

The theme of the projects ranged from developing new and innovative construction materials to water treatment solutions, from sustainable designs to optimization of cost and design of structures and from design of breakwater systems to design of pre engineered buildings. All students were issued a certificate of participation from the Dean. In total six students and their works were declared the winners of the competition which was evaluated by the subject experts in the department.

Ms. Maryam Abdullatif Abdullah Al Raisi and Mr. Ibrahim Shabbir Mohammed Ali has shared the first prize in the competition. Ms. Maryam has designed a vertical farm for a high end hotel in Muscat and her idea of sustainability was unique in terms of its planning and design. Mr. Ibrahim has designed a Pre Engineered Building for a car showroom. Ms. Maroa Ali Albahrani, who also won third place in the competition has worked on condition monitoring of reinforced concrete beams using destructive and non destructive methods.

Dr. Hafez, Head of the Department also opined that these competitions were necessary so as to inculcate a sense of creativity and problem solving in the minds of the young citizens. He informed that the next edition will be conducted in May 2019 with much bigger participation from students community and the representatives from the construction industry will be called upon to visit and have collaborations with the college on any technology they may find useful for their company. He also urged the construction industry to visit the campus and meet the students of the department for their recruitment and staffing needs.

The prize distribution was held on 6th January 2019 at the college campus. Professor A Vallavaraj, Associate Dean Undergraduate Studies, gave the mementos to the students and appreciated that the quality of students work in terms of technical, presentation and communication skills have improved over the past few years.
